International Health Project Officer

PURPOSE

The purpose of this position is to undertake public health research and international development work within the Burnet.  The position will be essential in supporting projects in Papua New Guinea and other low and middle-income countries, with a focus on Sexual and Reproductive Health and/or Maternal and Child Health and/or Health Services Development.  This position would suit public health professionals and researchers with an interest in gaining experience in global health. This position will be supported by intensive mentoring and training from senior global health research and development staff at the Burnet. The position is funded for an initial period of 12 months.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the coordination of public health research and international development projects
  • Support the implementation of public health research and international development projects, including short-term international travel as required
  • Contribute to education and training within the fields of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Maternal and Child Health
  • Support data collection, cleaning and analysis
  • Contribute to the dissemination of project findings through peer-reviewed journal articles, project reports, presentations and other appropriate media

 

CRITERIA

The successful applicant will have the following qualifications and experience.

Essential:

  • Degree in science, health or other field relevant to reproductive, sexual, maternal and/or child health in low- and middle-income countries
  • Expertise in sexual and reproductive health AND/OR maternal and child health AND/OR a health services improvement AND/OR public health
  • Experience with conducting health related research or development activities
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently exercising strong judgement, decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Willingness and capacity for short-term travel to Papua New Guinea and/or similar settings

 Desirable:

  • A post graduate qualification in science, public health or a relevant field
  • Previous experience in international development, research or not-for-profit organization
  • Experience working on databases or health information systems ideally within a health or research program
  • Experience in resource-constrained settings such as Papua New Guinea or similar
